Chinese people: We're the most civilized country on earth. We shouldn't trade with barbarians we have nothing to gain from it. We don't want to have anything to do with those people lest they disrupt the harmony of the Heavenly kingdom. If a foreign nation decided to give us tribute, we should give them ten times its worth to prove our superiority.
